28 Days Later

A bit more conceptual than most films shown in the US, and filmed on digital video for realistic immediacy, this frightening thriller is riveting entertainment that zooms you right into the midst of apocalyptic mayhem. Very similar to the environmental disaster flic, "The Day After Tomorrow", released a few years later. The movies are both fiction, but they are believable in that truth-is-stranger-than-fiction kind of way.

A psychology experiment gone horribly wrong unleashes a psychological virus called "rage". The epidemic spreads swiftly from lab monkeys who are released from their cages and infect the general population. As a quiet eye in the storm, the protagonist, Jim, awakens naked in a hospital from a coma due to an unrelated incident. From this innocent birth through a journey of putting together the facts, he moves to seizing the moment to determine his own destiny.

In the role opposite Jim, Selena has killed her family to survive. When they meet, she is cold, street-smart, attitudinal and emotionally shut down. Her character arc contrasts with Jim's. However, this film has more violence than romance. Banding with other survivors, they hear a radio signal from a military outpost. They make for the signal, hoping for salvation, but things are about to get even creepier.
